The Ammonia Oxidation Process for Nitric Acid Manufacture EARLY DEVELOPMENTS WITH PLATINUM CATALYSTS
نویسنده
چکیده
It is little more than jifty years since the Jirst manufacture of nitric acid by the oxidation of ammonia over a platinum catalyst. Ostwald’s original industrial plant had an output of some 100 tons of acid a year; today the world capacity for nitric acid manufacture by this process is about ten million tons a year. This article traces the beginnings and early developments of the process until it became commercially established.

Ammonia is oxidized over PtRh alloy gauzes to form NO as the first step in the industrial production of nitric acid, a process that has remained practically unchanged for over 80 years. The reaction typically yields 94–96% NO and 4–6% by-products (N2O and N2) at 1073–1223 K. [1] Major drawbacks associated with the platinum-based catalysts are: 1) high production cost, 2) metal loss in the form ...
متن کاملCatalytic Wet Oxidation of Ammonia Solution with Platinum- Palladium-rhodium Composite Oxide Catalyst
This study adopted high concentration aqueous solutions of ammonia for use in catalytic liquid-phase oxidation in a trickle-bed reactor with platinum-group metals (platinum-palladiumrhodium), prepared by the co-precipitation of H2PtCl6, Pd(NO3)3 and Rh(NO3)3. The experimental results revealed that a minimal amount of ammonia was removed from the solution by wet oxidation in the absence of any c...
متن کاملEffect of platinum on Ceria supported Cu catalysts for PrOx process in fuel processors
The CO preferential oxidation (PrOx) is one of the critical steps in hydrogen production and purification for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). This reaction was investigated in the presence of excess hydrogen over Cu/CeO2, Pt/CeO2 and Cu-Pt/CeO2 catalysts. The ceria supports was prepared via precipitation method and Cu-Pt/CeO2 catalyst was synthesized by sequential impregnation o...

Reaction behaviors and kinetics of catalytic oxidation of toluene with different feed flows over Pt/Zr(x)-HMS catalysts with Si/Zr ratio equal to 5, 10, 20 and 35 were investigated over a wide temperature range (200 – 500 oC). Results show that Pt/Zr(x)-HMS performs more easily toluene oxidation. The kinetic data were fitted by the Power-law and Mars–van Krevelen kinetic models. The fitting res...

The Society of Automotive Engineers’ (Sm) Detroit World Congress in the Cob0 Center (5th-8th March) was a great success, with some 50,000 delegates, and about 1300 technical presentations. There were many well-attended sessions on the control of engine exhaust emissions, and this selective review focuses on papers concerned with platinum group metal @gm) catalysts. Platinum oxidation catalysts ...
